Founder’s Day Address: Skepticism as Religion.
Freethinkers have always responded skeptically to those who would claim to know religious and moral truth. How can anyone say, ‘I know what makes life meaningful’? Freethinkers rightly sense either a power grab or ignorance behind such assertions.
The American writer Kurt Vonnegut stands as one of the great contemporary American voices of religious skepticism. He saw ignorance and power grabs behind much of what passes for religion. Yet his skepticism seems to arise out of a kind of religious conviction. His own family belonged to the Indianapolis freie gemeinde congregation. Join us for Founder’s Day as we explore the religious ideas of one of our own, and in particular ponder whether religious skepticism itself can be a kind of religious expression.
