The “Baraboo Chicken Movement”
Two years ago the Free Congregation introduced a “Young Voices Series” into its 3rd Sunday Free Thought Forum, and since that time we’ve heard from three gifted and compelling speakers. Please join us this Sunday as Maia Persche, our youngest “voice” ever, shares her story of activism and engagement in small-town Wisconsin government. Here’s how Maia describes it:
Six months ago my friend and I began a long conversation with the city of Baraboo that recently ended with the passing of an ordinance that allows residents to raise backyard chickens in town. This journey into politics was inspired by watching many cities across the country take the initiative to begin working towards food independence. Along the way, I learned a lot about sustainable local food and the workings of city government. I’m excited to share this story with you!
