Should We Be Garlic Mustard Warriors?
Twenty years ago you would have had to search hard to find Garlic Mustard in Sauk County. Now, as one of our harbingers of spring, the challenge is finding a place without it. Should we all feel guilty about sitting in Park Hall this morning when there are so many noxious weeds that need pulling? How do we decide where to put our eco-defending energy, given that Garlic Mustard, Gypsy Moths, Emerald Ash Borers, Climate Change, Peak Oil and God knows what else all want our attention?
Brian Pruka has lived in southern Wisconsin for past twenty years and watched Garlic Mustard work its way into the fabric of our native woodlands. He has a masters degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, conducting research on oak ecosystems. He is not sure if he has pulled his dutiful share of Garlic Mustard this spring or not.
