A Defense of Monogamous, Committed Romance – February 14th, 2010
A few years ago, Jen and I and my brother went to St. John’s, in the US Virgin Islands, for a week. One night, Jen stayed in, and my brother and I went out about the town. My brother is single, and it became my job to help my brother meet as many of the young, single women as we could find. We found some. I confess that I had a very good time finding and meeting all of these young women, and throughout the night I found my marriage commitments somewhat burdensome. Of course, I was just trying to help my brother – you know, thinking of others, helping a loved one. Anyway, I had spent a number of years wrapped up in the intensity and insularity of farm and kids and family; the power of the temptations of romance surprised me, given how much I had at stake.
