Cosmological Argument

Definition:  ‘God’ means maximal expression of ‘actuality’ or ‘fact.’

Definition:  ‘fact’ means ‘concrete’ or ‘particular’ and also ‘contingent’ or ‘falsifiable.’

Definition:  ‘maximal’ means ‘greatest conceivable expression.’

Argument

  1. Something exists (Gamwell’s argument)
  2. Something actual exists (ontological principle)
  3. Actualities are partially determined (Hartshorne)
  4. There are many actualities (corollary to 3.)
  5. Each actuality valuates other actualities (corollary to 3.)
  6. Valuation of actualities requires a cosmic, or all-inclusive, standard of valuation. (Gamwell)
  7. cosmic standard of valuation must itself be actual (Gamwell)
  8. God is the all-inclusive actuality expressing that cosmic standard. (definition)


Sum: the greatest conceivable expression of contingency is the perpetual or eternal perishing of a personality.
