Fifth Sundays at the
Free Congregation
On Fifth Sundays, which occur three or four times a year, we usually plan a field trip that sets out immediately following a short program at Park Hall. More often than not the program is in some way related to the field trip. Last November, for example, we had a Ph.D. student in Art History from the University of Chicago talk to us about the problems involved in returning expropriated art treasures to the former colonies from which they were collected, “liberated,” or stolen. Then we moved on to the Chazen Art Center in Madison to view the celebrated Mami Wata: Arts for Water Spirits in Africa and Its Diasporas exhibit. More recently, we visited Nature’s Acres Organic Farm in the Baraboo Bluffs, owned and operated by one of our members, to learn about maple syrup production and the preparation of organic herbal products. This followed a short program in which members shared poems, stories, and reminiscences on the subject of winter-into-spring.
