Proofs for God: January through second week in February 2010 (5 weeks)
In this class we'll discuss the possibility of proving the existence of God. We'll look at St. Thomas Cosmological Argument, the Ontological Argument of St. Anselm, and we'll also explore criticisms of these proposed proofs. Good, hardcore philosophy offered here, plus controversy!
Judaism. Mid-February through early March (3 weeks)
This class will be the next portion of last year's World Religions class. We will look at Jewish history, theology, and holidays. One class we be devoted to the differences between Eastern theology and the theology of the Abrahamic (Western) tradition.
Short Story Discussion of Ursula LeGuin's “A Fisherman of the Inland Sea” (2 weeks, rest of March)
Come and discussion a swirling combination of religion, romantic love, marriage arrangements, and human tragedy in this wonderful sci-fi story (about 70 pages) by Taoist author Ursula LeGuin. Does the universe care about human love? Is human life always tragic? What does marriage mean? Two sessions won't be enough!
